Definition of a chronograph watch
A “chronograph” is a device that graphically records time intervals. On wristwatches this is done by adding a “sub dial” or and additional hand such as a “second hand”. Therefore, chronograph watch is a watch with multi function “sub dials” on the main dial. The regular wristwatch was first made in the late 1700’s and it was simply a pocket watch with straps to attach the pocket watch to the wrist. The “sub dial” started first as the day date “sub dial” and this is what makes Rolex “Day Date” classic watches so collectible. As watch making techniques continued to special with multi function tasks the day date “sub dial” as joined with other specialized “sub dial” that included “day of the week” sub dial and “month of the year” sub dials.

The movements of chronograph watches is very complex and the complexity and the cost of the watch dramatically increases with the addition of each sub dial and the movement “complex” that performs the designated task, such as showing the date, the day of the week, the moon and sun, the month of the year. Then as the world advanced and man created racing cars as an important sport the chronograph watch was redesigned to separate the hour and second hand movements. This allowed for the second hand to be stopped and started with the push of a button. By necessity the ‘Stop Watch” was created. However, this is a specialized watch the standard chronograph watch movement is modeled after the success of the Rolex chronograph dials with the chronograph movements restricted to day, date and month identification dials.
Chronograph Movements for Specialized Sport Activities
Car racing and aviation caused company like Cartier Paris to develop special chronograph watches for “clocking sports cars” and for “tacking time while flying into multiple time zones” that is tracking the time the has elapsed from one point to another point. Horse racing, with betting, also meant that an accurate “stop watch” second hand dial be created for this sport, not the mention the political fall-out at Olympic games for foot races. The measurement of time became an obsession in our modern society. War Chronograph Movements for Pilots, Dual Two Time Zone Watches, Military 24 hour Chronograph Movements
There are two important changes in wristwatches that were brought about by war and those are watches with chronograph sub dials that give time in standard GMT time and also 24 hour military time. The pilots, big dial, watches are another necessity of war and the pilot of those times had to track how many hours of time he had spent in the air because that told him how much “fuel time” he had left. As diving became an important commercial activity, diving was no longer limited to “hobby” divers. The military trained divers in the navy and because of this they needed underwater water watches that would have a movable “bezel dial” to let the diver know when he was going to run out of air. The best known diving watches were the Rolex “submariner” watches with a “sealed casket” on the watch case that would with stand under water pressures and keep accurate time. Most people have forgotten that the telephone lines from New York City to the London telephone exchange was known as the “Atlantic Cable” and this installation require many under water divers with accurate time pieces. And the Navy developed teams of workmen to serve ships that were still in the water by using scuba divers – yes – with special “dive watches” that could be set to let divers know when they were going to run out of oxygen.
The definition of a chronograph watch is simple and complex
The simplicity is that a chronograph watch has a sub dial that is used to tell you time information other than the standard dial with an (1) hour hand and (2) a minute hand, then (3) maybe a second hand. A chronograph watch adds a “sub dial” or special “hand” for time measurement that is specific. The first “chronograph” watches included a “sub dial” for the (1) day date, then (2) “month of the year dial” and (3) day of the week. Special sports activities meant developing a “chronograph” function dial that became a “stop watch” second hand dial that could be started and stopped with the competitors of a race.
