Why all the admiration for automatic tourbillion mechanical watches? There are several reasons why automatic tourbillon watches are held in such high admiration and esteem today. First of all, the veneration given the tourbillon is due to the unquestioned and deserved prestige of its precision and because it is the most complicated and expense of all watch mechanism to made by the Swiss watchmakers. The automatic tourbillion was invented by Swiss watch maker Abraham Brequet as a “pocket watch” mechanical device. In Brequet’s quest for greater precision, Breguet, in the 1850’s, came up with the idea of a mechanism that would compensate for the deviation in running accuracy that was observed when pocket watches, that were keep vertical in the owner’s pockets, and that were slowed down because of the vertical downward pull of gravity on the standard automatic watch movements.
Brequet’s concept was a rotating cage that would bear all of the parts of the escapement; in its center, the automatic tourbillon cage would carry the regulating organ (the balance); and the escape-pinion would revolve around the second wheel. A typical tourbillion mechanism contains about 100 parts and it is only made by the best, most experienced watch makers. The automatic tourbillion movement are the most expensive automatic watch movements made and they are made of gold and usually the pivot pins of the movable parts rest on chip rubies or other gemstones that do not wear, even after 200 years of use.
